MY WORK

I care about institutional change and work to shape it by creating spaces for growth and continued vision.

Projects I'm currently working on:
-
Curriculum: Adapting & Transforming with Emerging Technologies
-
Faculty Hiring, Development, & Onboarding
-
The Pre-Major Experience: Supporting the Whole Student

Leadership & Administration

As a scholar, I am interested in exploring how communities both remember and forget their pasts. My research focuses on the particular objects and materials of memory, from the mundane (Christmas ornaments) to the more spectacular (monuments).

Books:
-
Confederate Exceptionalism: Civil War Myth and Memory in the Twenty-First Century
-
Communicating Memory & History (edited with David W. Park)

Research & Writing

As a teacher, mentor, and advisor, I am invested in co-creating knowledge with my students, supporting their sense of exploration and discovery, and curating experiences for their growth inside and outside the classroom.
Highlights:
-
Race & Racism at the University of Richmond Project
-
Mentoring summer research projects on American Girl Dolls, plantation weddings, and South African monuments
-
Collaborating with students and community partners to launch multi-class exhibits, installations, and walking tours

Teaching, Mentoring, &
Advising
"...Representing the best of what it means to bridge scholarship to teaching, Dr. Maurantonio has challenged our campus to conceive of itself differently - to look back at its past and to see itself anew, and to do so with engagement and honesty."

ABOUT ME
I am an interdisciplinary teacher-scholar who has felt academic “home” in a number of places. I have moved between economics, history, communication, and American studies because I’ve found myself most interested in working across spaces, building connections, and learning about the intersections that are unanticipated, unexpected, and unique. Those interests have also led me into administration where I enjoy building structures that support the whole person and shape institutional change.
